What is wool wax undercoating?

The main ingredient is lanolin, also known as wool wax, a waxy substance naturally derived from sheep's wool. Our coating is formulated from specially processed wool wax, combined with agents that inhibit corrosion, promote penetration into the base metal, and aid with water displacement. Together, this creates a thick, waxy film barrier that penetrates and prevents moisture, oxygen, and road salt from reaching the base metal, stopping rust. This waxy film doesn’t dry, but remains soft and pliable, making it self-healing and impossible to chip or crack. It is always active and migrating into inaccessible areas, such as the seams and folds of sheet metal in doors, frame rails, and rockers. It is available in a straw colour, which appears fairly clear when applied, and is also available in black.

Why is this better than rubber undercoating?

There are many benefits to a lanolin-based undercoating over a rubber undercoating:

  • Lanolin undercoating does not dry. Instead, it penetrates the base metal and forms a waxy film barrier that moisture and oxygen cannot penetrate. This waxy film remains soft and pliable, making it self-healing, and impossible to crack. On the other hand, rubber undercoatings degrade, whether through age or by chipping and cracking getting hit by road debris. This actually allows water to get behind and trapped against the metal behind the rubber coating. Rather than preventing rust, this promotes it. We often see rubber undercoatings peeling off with worse rust behind them than areas that weren’t coated.

  • Lanolin undercoating can be applied over rust. This would be impossible for a rubber undercoating, as it would not properly adhere and would not stop rust from getting worse under the surface unless the rust was fully removed. Our undercoating has agents that inhibit corrosion, promote penetration into the base metal, and aid with water displacement. This allows it to penetrate through rust, inhibit corrosion at the source, and form a self-healing barrier that stops oxygen and water from reaching the metal. Without oxygen and water, rust cannot progress. Additionally, the black colour coating refreshes the look of rusty undercarriages.

How often does my vehicle need to be undercoated?

Lanolin undercoating is extremely resistant to wash-off. Under typical road conditions, lanolin undercoating will need to be reapplied every 2-3 years. The most exposed areas will face the most wear and tear and will need touch-ups the most often. In protected enclosed areas (doors, tailgates, frame rails, rocker panels, etc.), a single treatment will provide protection for many years. We recommend a touch-up application to exposed undercarriage areas every 12 months. This allows us to ensure that the coating is performing at its best. Since we don’t have to fully reapply the coating at these annual applications, we are able to charge much less for these than for a full reapplication after 2-3 years.

If wool wax undercoating doesn’t dry, will dirt, sand, etc. stick to it?

Because lanolin undercoating is non-drying, it will attract an initial coating of sand/dirt. Anything that may adhere can easily be rinsed off with a low-pressure garden hose. Because it contains no solvents, it will not become tacky or sticky and create a dirt buildup.

If wool wax undercoating doesn’t dry, won't it wash off?

Lanolin undercoating is extremely resistant to wash-off because it is so thick. Let the coating settle in for a couple of weeks and then you can run it through the car wash regularly. You will not wash off any of the thick, waxy coating with a regular undercarriage rinse. We do not recommend that you pressure-wash the undercarriage. But car wash spray will not even make a dent in the coating. Our coating will provide protection for 2+ years under normal road conditions. We know what it takes to build a product that holds up to tough winter roads that are coated with salt and sand.

How long does it take to apply the coating?

We ask that the vehicle be dropped off by 10 AM and picked up after 4 PM. This gives us time to wash the undercarriage, let it dry fully, and then apply the coating.
